In a move that celebrates both legacy and innovation, Tom Dodd Nurseries, Inc. has officially announced the acquisition of Van Der Giessen Nursery, uniting two respected names in the Southern nursery industry.
For owner John Williams Jr., this merger is more than a business decision — it’s the continuation of a shared story that began generations ago in the heart of Semmes, Alabama.
“Our goal has always been to grow happiness — through plants, people, and partnerships,” Williams says. “Van Der Giessen has long been a respected grower with a passion for unique ornamental shrubs, both old and new, which makes this an incredibly natural fit.”
Both nurseries have long been pillars of horticultural excellence, known for their commitment to exceptional plant quality, strong customer relationships, and sustainable growing practices. The partnership is set to strengthen production capacity, expand customer offerings, and carry forward a legacy of craftsmanship that has defined both brands for decades.
NEW LOADING DOCK TOUR
Enjoy this tour of our new loading dock. It is packed which beautiful orders shipping to customers today. We are so excited for the efficiency this will add to our shipping process.
This loading dock has 6 total bays. Conveyer systems at each bay to make the loading process faster. We have EZ Shipper, CC Racks and pallet racks available per customer request. This dock has a trucking lounge with a shower and resting area and a new tag office.

At Tom Dodd, we offer 3 efficient shipping rack options to get your plants delivered safely, securely with damage free:
🚛 Pallet Towers – Recyclable pallet racks that can be reused or broken down and recycled. Will need fork lift or pallet jack for unloading.
🛒 CC Racks – reusable and convenient rolling carts ideal for garden centers and customers needing quick and efficient unloading options.
🚚 EZ Shipper Racks – custom-designed for maximum plant protection in transit. Steel corner boards and shelves made for damage free transport. Will need fork lift or pallet jack for unloading.

WE ARE EXPANDING!
We have broken ground on our new shipping dock estimated to be completed by October 2024. This will improve our shipping practices and ensure our customers are getting the best quality material in a fast and effective manner. We have also acquired the former Blackwell Nursery where we are currently in the process of clearing brush and installing sprinkler systems. This will add an additional 56 acers of production space for us to grow more of your Happiness!!
